Physicochemical properties in relation to biological action

Physical and Chemical properties of organic medicinal agents that influence pharmacological action in our body.

1- IONIZATION
2- SOLUBILITY
3- PARTITION COEFFICIENT
4- HYDROGEN BONDING
5- PROTEIN BINDING
6- CHELATION
7- BIOISOSTERISM
8- OPTICAL & GEOMETRICAL ISOMERISM

          1-IONIZATION
👉🏻Ionization of a drug play an important role in pharmacokinetics.
👉🏻In this process drug dissociated into ions i.e cation &anion .
👉🏻It cation & anion obtained by losing and gaining electrons.
AB  (drug) --------------> A+ cation  +    B- anion

Relation to biological action
Ionized form imparts good water solubility to the drug , which is essential for good binding interaction of drug with its receptor.
While non-ionized form helps the drug to cross cell membranes hence,
"A good balance of ionized - non-ionized forms is essential for better pharmacokinetics & pharmacodynamics"
